Historical Timeline Of The Quail Springs Church of Christ Oklahoma City |
In 1985 Robert H. Rowland (1926-2013), who was an elder at the Village / Quail Springs Church of Christ from 1973 to 1991, taught a course called, "Old Truths Re-Examined". The first six weeks dealt with the role of women in the church. The class was taught first to a large adult class, then to the college class, then to the elders, staff and adult teachers, and finally to the combined Sunday morning adult classes in the auditorium with about 700 present. He later expressed his views on the role of women in a book "I Permit Not A Woman..." To Remain Shackled in which he claims that women may speak in the assembly, teach men, preach and provide leadership in the church. The title uses the first part of 1 Timothy 2:12, "And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man" but replaces the last part with "to remain shackled."

Evaluation:
When I first saw the title of this book I was astounded that anyone would be so
arrogant and disrespectful of the word of God to chop off the end of a verse and replace
it with his own words! But when I read the book I discovered that the title accurately
illustrates what he does throughout the book! Invalid arguments are used to contradict
the word of God.
